can a 16 year old purchase a long gun in NY?

I am 16 years old, I have taken the NYS hunter certification class and I have a hunting license. I always thought the law to purchase a long gun was 16 but my older brother said it was 18. The local hunting shop has a good deal on a shotgun i was looking to get for deer hunting in the fall but before i show up at the store with the money I want to know if i can even buy it.

NY law allows you to possess a shotgun at 16 when you are engaged in legal hunting or target shooting. Federal law does not permit you to purchase a long gun from a dealer until you’re 18. I believe it is legal in NY for you to purchase a long gun from an INDIVIDUAL who is not a firearms dealer. Suggestions:
1) Ask one of your parents to purchase the shotgun for you at the gun store.
2) Buy a good used shotgun, they’re out there for sale by individuals, though lots of newspapers won’t put them in the classified ads any more (‘cuz guns are scary)
